It appears that 2021 has seen a paradigm shift in the way organisations and especially managers work. The COVID-19 pandemic has advanced the use of remote working - previously this was a feature of only a small number of organisations but is now a new normal.
Managers as Coaches On-line
Remote working brings with it, new challenges for organisations and managers including how to communicate, motivate and support remote team members. Organisations will need to develop a new type of manager – one that can support team members and deliver high quality coaching and support from a far – the REMOTE MANAGER!
The new manager needs to be able to develop behaviours and mindsets that will help them to look ahead and adapt. They need to practice empathy to support team members in uncertain times; they need to be able to empathise with their teams and team members and be able to have difficult conversations. They will need to develop new approaches and be able to develop new channels of communication to meet the new needs of team members.
As businesses assess the full impact of the COVID19 pandemic, they will need to identify and nurture ‘homegrown leaders and managers’ equipped with the skills needed for the new business environment. Managers will need to become proficient coaches and employers will need to develop a coaching culture.
The reality of remote working is less face-to-face interaction. With increasing numbers of employees are spending time alone, managers will need to provide appropriate coaching to support remote team members – this will be critical in terms of creating and sustaining an engaged and motivated team.
So, now is the time that businesses need to review their approach to management and leadership. They need to develop and implement strategies to support the delivery of impactful coaching to support remote working – Managers as Coaches has a role to play in supporting Europe’s army of small and medium sized enterprises.
Another Erasmus+ project related to MAC is Coaching MAPS (CMAP) – this project has created a new and powerful coaching model which means managers can use one of the 12 ‘off-the-shelf’ Coaching MAPs to improving their organisation’s performance by adopting one or more High Performance Working Practices (HPWP).
