VET trainers from the Managers as Coaches Erasmus+ project were supposed to meet in the Czech Republic for the MAC training the trainer course. Unfortunately, the COVID19 pandemic resulted in the project team converting the training into an online training course hosted by Exponential Training.

Managers as Coaches On-line

With travel restrictions in place across most of Europe, the Managers as Coaches Erasmus+ project team adapted the training course into an on-line learning course. Delivered by John Moore and Anne-Marie Daly, the course as still lively and highly interactive.

The focus on the course was the delivery of the skill component thereby enabling the fourteen VET teacher/trainers to be able to run their National MAC pilot test in 2021. The course saw the participants learn about the main underlying causes of underperformance of managers, teams, and enterprises and how coaching can address many of them.

During the course, the participants had an opportunity to learn about a new coaching model call Coaching MAPs (CMAP). After learning about how to use a CMAP, participants then had to prepare a coaching session using the CMAP Model. The participants also learn more about how to use and play the Manager as Coaches board game. Following a discussion about how to adapt the playing of the board game to an on-line model, it was agreed that Gabe van der Zwaag from Business Development Friesland (NL) who led the development of the MAC board game would host an on-line session in how to use the game on-line

Led by Gabe, the participants took turns to roll the dice and to move their player’s piece around the board – Gabe shared his screen so participants could see what was happening. Gabe then shared the details on the card enabling the activity to progress. There are four card decks which correspond to squares on the board – the four card categories are: Top Tips, Practice Problems, ‘What to Say’ and Coaching Skills.

Although not ideal, it was agreed that the MAC game could be pilot tested using this model with local managers if it was not possible to hold a face-to-face training course. The project partners discussed their pilot plans which will see managers from across Europe using the new board game in 2021.

The Managers as Coaches training course will be launched alongside the Managers as Coaches board game in 2021. The results of the pilot testing will be shared around the summar of 2021 therefore watch this space for more details!

Another Erasmus+ project related to MAC is Coaching MAPS (CMAP) – this project has created a new and powerful coaching model which means managers can use one of the 12 ‘off-the-shelf’ Coaching MAPs to improving their organisation’s performance by adopting one or more High Performance Working Practices (HPWP).
