How effective are your managers at coaching teams and team members? Research and observations suggest that most managers are ‘ill-equipped to deliver impactful coaching. But what skills are essential for high quality coaching?
Coaching Skills for Managers
There are a whole range of skills, tools, and techniques that managers need to be effective coaches including: listening and questioning skills, how to provide feedback and how to build trust and rapport, action planning and being a great all-round communicator. The new learning modules as part of Managers as Coaches explores all of these plus many more.
The first module, The Manager as a Coach provides an overview of the Managers as Coaches (MAC) Erasmus+ project. It focusses on helping managers to better understand what is involved in being an effective manager and the skills that today’s managers need. It explores what is meant by coaching and includes guidelines which help can be used to deliver effective coaching sessions. Finally, it also includes a new coaching model - the C-MAP framework and it can be used to plan and deliver coaching sessions with teams and team members.
The second module, Performance Management introduces the importance of performance management and coaching in the workplace. It explores the concept of ‘personal effectiveness’ and looks at how we learn and develop confidence. This Module also considers some of the barriers that inhibit effective performance and how to overcome them using coaching.
The final module, Coaching Essentials for Managers provides an insight into the practical skills and techniques used by managers when coaching teams and individuals. It explores how to set objectives and listen effectively, how ask questions and how to provide feedback. It also explores how to use the C-MAP Model to plan and deliver effective coaching sessions.
In the coming months, the Managers as Coaches training course will be launched alongside the Managers as Coaches board game. Considering the pandemic and the associated travel and lockdown restrictions, the Managers as Coaches course will be delivered on-line – watch this space for more details!
Other projects that will be of interest include:
Coaching MAPS (CMAP) – this project has created a new and powerful coaching model which means managers can use one of the 12 ‘off-the-shelf’ Coaching MAPs to improving their organisation’s performance by adopting one or more High Performance Working Practices (HPWP).
